Seated at a writing table with a quill in hand, the sitter in this half-plate daguerreotype is Forbes Winslow (1810–1874), an English physician known for his writings on insanity and mental illness. The record also lists him under the variant name "Dr. Winston." The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, whose portraits from the 1840s and 1850s helped establish photography as a fashionable art in America. Gold toning, applied to this plate, warmed its silver tones and strengthened the image surface.
