Few sitters of the daguerreotype era carried as much scientific weight as Michael Faraday, the English chemist and physicist whose 1831 discovery of electromagnetic induction laid the groundwork for the electric motor and generator. In this half-plate portrait he sits turned three-quarters to the right, one hand resting on a table, a relaxed pose suited to a man known for patient experiment. The plate has been gold toned, a treatment that deepens the image's tonal range and helps protect its silver surface, and the name Faraday scratched on the back identifies the sitter. The record credits the portrait to Mathew Brady's studio, a prominent American portrait operation, and dates it somewhere between 1844 and 1860.
