Scratched into the face of this plate is the name "Inman," identifying the sitter as Henry Inman (1801–1846), a painter best known for his portraits. He sits half-length, turned three-quarters to the right, with a walking stick beside him and a book on a small table draped in a cloth decorated with a lyre pattern. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1846, when daguerreotypes were prized for their sharp detail, and gold toning gives the image its warm surface. Its likeness is close to another plate catalogued as no. 440, and the picture later passed through the U.S. War College before entering the Library of Congress.
