The back of this half-plate daguerreotype carries a scratched inscription, "Gen. Wool," that identifies the sitter as John Ellis Wool, a career Army officer who fought in the War of 1812 and later led troops at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War. Produced in Mathew Brady's studio, the portrait shows him in uniform, three-quarters turned, and has been gold toned, a process that enriched its tones and helped protect the silvered surface. The plate's 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College explains how this personal military record came to the Library of Congress.
