Shown in three-quarter view turned to the right, the physician John Wakefield Francis (1789-1861) sits for this half-plate daguerreotype, made in Mathew Brady's New York studio sometime between 1844 and 1860. Francis practiced medicine in New York and moved in the city's literary and professional circles. Gold toning, applied to the silvered plate, gives the image its warm tonality and helps stabilize the surface. Notations scratched on the back show the plate later passed through the U.S. War College before reaching the Library of Congress in 1920.
