A half-length portrait of John Hill Wheeler, turned three-quarters to the left, bears his name scratched into the face of the plate, a handwritten mark that points to early cataloguing. Wheeler was a lawyer and diplomat who served as United States minister to Nicaragua in the late 1850s, though the record also links the name to a "Hon. John Wheeler of New York." The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the leading portrait medium, and the gold toning deepened and warmed its silvery surface. The trimmed lower corners show the plate was altered after it was made.
