The plate is a half-plate daguerreotype of John P. Morton (1807-1889), posed three-quarters to the left in a half-length view. Its back is scratched with the numeral 6 and stamped with the Rinhart hallmark, small marks that help trace a plate's handling and supply. The image was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when portraits were usually made as single, mirror-like images on silver-coated copper. Gold toning, applied after development, strengthened the image and warmed its tones. The plate came to the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College.
