The inscription scratched on the back of this plate identifies the sitter as Hon. John M. Clayton of Delaware, Secretary of State in President Zachary Taylor's cabinet. Clayton, a Delaware senator, is best remembered for negotiating the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Britain in 1850, which dealt with any future canal across Central America. The half-plate daguerreotype, toned with gold, comes from Mathew Brady's studio and dates to between 1844 and 1856, when studio portraits like this one were prized for their fine detail.
