This half-length portrait shows John Adams Dix in civilian dress, turned three-quarters to the left, with the long hair he wore before the Civil War. Dix had a long public career: he served in the U.S. Senate from New York in the 1840s, later commanded Union troops, became Secretary of the Treasury under Buchanan, and was elected governor of New York in 1872. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, a period when daguerreotypes were the leading form of portrait photography. The inscription scratched on the back, along with a 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College, documents the plate's later history.
