Sam Houston sits in civilian dress, clean shaven and turned three-quarters to the left, in this half-plate daguerreotype whose image has been warmed by gold toning. The plate dates from about 1848 to 1850, when Houston was serving as a United States senator from Texas, a post that followed his leadership of Texan forces at San Jacinto in 1836 and his service as president of the Republic of Texas. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio, and the identification rests on an inscription scratched on the back of the plate and on a Konrad lithograph in Huber's 1856 *History of Texas*.
