A half-length portrait of a man identified as Mr. Simms, turned three-quarters to the left, this half plate daguerreotype is one of many such studio portraits from the 1840s and 1850s, and its record offers the sitter's name without further biography. It was made in Mathew Brady's studio at some point between 1844 and 1860, a period when Brady was building his reputation photographing public figures and ordinary Americans alike. Each daguerreotype is a unique image on silver-plated copper, so no other print of this exact portrait exists. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and was transferred in 1920, and the number 121 scratched on its back may reflect how the plate was tracked.
