A handwritten inscription scratched on the back of this plate reads "Sen. Hunter, Virginia," tying the portrait to Robert M. T. Hunter, who represented Virginia in the U.S. Senate during the 1840s and 1850s. Hunter had earlier served as Speaker of the House and later became Confederate Secretary of State. He sits in a half-length, three-quarter pose turned to the left. The half plate daguerreotype, gold toned, was made in Mathew Brady's studio, and it was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920.
