Nathan Kelsey Hall appears in this gold-toned half-plate daguerreotype, turned three-quarters to the left, made in Mathew Brady's studio. Hall served as Postmaster General under President Millard Fillmore from 1850 to 1852, and the plate's inscriptions identify him by that office. The likeness was matched to an engraving by F. Halpin that ran as the frontispiece of the *American Whig Review* in February 1852, showing that the portrait reached print. Gold toning was a common finishing step for daguerreotypes of this period, adding warmth and depth to the silver image.
