Few sitters photographed in the Brady studio carried a more famous name than John Van Buren, son of President Martin Van Buren and known in New York politics as "Prince John." Here he is shown in a half-length pose, turned three-quarters to the left, a common arrangement that gave studio portraits a sense of ease and presence. Gold toning, often applied to daguerreotypes of the period, warms the silvered surface and softens its contrasts. The plate, made between 1844 and 1860 when Van Buren was active in Democratic politics, bears a 1920 transfer mark from the U.S. War College before entering the Library of Congress.
