John Van Buren, son of President Martin Van Buren, sits turned three-quarters to the left in this half plate daguerreotype. A New York lawyer and politician known as "Prince John," he was a prominent Democrat who later joined the Free Soil movement opposing the spread of slavery into new territories. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, whose portraits of prominent Americans in the 1840s and 1850s are among the era's best known. Numbers scratched on the plate and its back hint at its handling, and the Library of Congress received it by transfer from the U.S. War College in 1920.
