A half-plate daguerreotype of John A. Kennedy shows him from the waist up, turned three-quarters to the left with his eyes fixed on the viewer. The record dates it between 1844 and 1860 and credits Mathew Brady's studio, one of the best-known portrait operations of the period. Its surface has been gold-toned, a treatment that added warmth and some protection to the silver image. The plate's back carries a scratched inscription with Kennedy's name, and the catalog notes alternate readings, John A. Kane and John A. Kanll, that show how hard such marks can be to decipher. The plate reached the Library of Congress through the U.S. War College, which transferred it in 1920.
