The sitter's name is scratched into the face of this half-plate daguerreotype, with a second, misspelled version, "Sebastan," appearing beside it. The portrait shows William King Sebastian (1814-1865) in a half-length pose turned three-quarters to the left, with his eyes fixed on the viewer. It was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when Brady's Washington and New York galleries were drawing prominent sitters. Gold toning, applied after development, strengthened the image and gave it the warm tones that collectors still prize. The plate was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920 and later entered the Library of Congress.
