The inscription scratched on the back of this half-plate daguerreotype names the sitter as G.W. Jones of Iowa, which ties the portrait to a man who served Western territories and states in Washington. Jones, born in 1804, was a delegate for Wisconsin Territory and later one of Iowa's first two U.S. senators, serving from 1848 to 1859. The plate is gold toned, a chemical treatment that warmed the silvery image and made its surface more durable, and it came from the studio of Mathew Brady, whose sitters included many prominent national figures of the period. Jones appears in half length, turned slightly to the left, with a full beard and a direct gaze at the camera.
