The sitter is turned three-quarters to the left in a half-length pose, with his eyes fixed straight ahead on the lens. Scratched numbers on the face and back of the plate, along with a note reading "Sebastian, Sen.," show how studio plates were tracked. The record names Charles Hazen Peaslee as the subject but also offers William King Sebastian as an alternative, an identification drawn from an 1855 engraving by J.C. Buttre for the U.S. Review. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1848 and 1855, the half plate is gold toned, a step that strengthened the image and warmed its tones.
