Its identification rests on a likeness printed in G.S. Hilliard's 1856 *Memoir of James Brown*, published the year after Brown died in 1855. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, which had become one of the best-known daguerreotype portrait businesses in America by the mid-1840s. Brown stands three-quarters turned, eyes front, one hand on his hip, and the plaid waistcoat is clearly visible, a pose typical of the confident formality studio sitters favored. The gold toning, applied after exposure, strengthened the image's contrast and gave the silvery surface a warmer, more durable tone.
