A misspelled name, "Browerton," is scratched into the face of this plate, and the number 126 is etched on the back. The sitter, George Douglas Brewerton (1820-1901), was a writer whose work drew on his service in the Mexican War and his travels in the American West. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, which photographed many prominent Americans in the 1840s and 1850s. Gold toning, applied to many daguerreotypes of this period, gave the silvered surface a warmer tone and greater durability.
