A plate scratched with the words "Lockwood, artist" identifies the sitter in this half-plate daguerreotype, which shows him in half-length, turned three-quarters to the right with his eyes fixed on the camera. The studio pose was typical of the 1840s and 1850s, when daguerreotype portraits were prized as a new kind of likeness. The plate was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose firm photographed many artists, politicians and public figures of the period. Gold toning, applied after development, warmed the silvery image and helped protect its delicate surface.
