A three-quarter turn and a hand tucked into the coat set this gold-toned half-plate daguerreotype apart from other portraits of Thomas Starr King. King was a Unitarian minister who became a well-known public speaker in Boston and then in San Francisco, where he worked to keep California loyal to the Union during the Civil War. He died in 1864. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, whose operation produced many of the period's portraits of public figures. The identification rests on an inscription scratched on the back and on a matching engraving published in 1877.
