Abraham Oakey Hall, the New York lawyer who later served as the city's mayor during the Tweed era, sat for this half-plate daguerreotype in the 1840s or 1850s, when the medium was the leading form of portrait photography. The identification rests on a comparison with an 1883 engraving of a later Sarony photograph, not on a label from the time, and the name is scratched on the back of the plate. The image was made at Mathew Brady's studio, and its gold toning gives the silvery surface a warmer cast.
