Novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne appears in this half-length view, turned three-quarters to the right, with his eyes fixed on the viewer. The plate dates from between 1850 and 1855, the years after *The Scarlet Letter* (1850) made him one of the best-known writers in America, and *Ballou's Pictorial* identified it in 1855 as a daguerreotype by the Boston firm Whipple & Black. Gold toning gives the silvered surface its warm brown cast, and the record suggests it may be a copy, a photograph of an earlier image, which was a common practice at the time.
