This half-plate daguerreotype shows Alexander Duff, who lived from 1806 to 1878, in a three-quarter view turned to the right. It was made in 1854 in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose firm, with locations in New York and Washington, produced many portraits of public figures and ordinary sitters during the 1850s. The gold toning applied after development warms the silver image and helps protect its delicate surface. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress in 1920, and a number scratched on its back still hints at its place in an earlier sequence.
