Scratched into the plate are the numbers 239 and 136 and the note "Jacob Thompson, Cabinet, 1857," which tie this half-length portrait to the Mississippian who served as Secretary of the Interior under President James Buchanan. The sitter turns three-quarters to the right, and the gold toning gives the silvered plate the warm cast favored in studio work of the 1850s. The image came from Mathew Brady's studio, and its identification was made by comparison with a mezzotint by H.S. Sadd.
