A half-length portrait of David Dudley Field, a New York lawyer and reformer, shows him turned three-quarters to the right in this half-plate daguerreotype. Mathew Brady's studio produced the plate sometime between 1844 and 1860, and its gold toning gives the silvery image a warmer tone and added durability. The sitter is confirmed through a later reproduction in *The Green Bag* from 1891, which shows Field as an older man. Field's work on New York's codes of civil procedure, along with the prominence of his brothers Cyrus Field in telegraphy and Stephen J. Field on the U.S. Supreme Court, makes him a notable sitter of the period.
