Few portraits from the 1840s and 1850s show a New York businessman as directly as this half-length study of William Frederick Havemeyer, turned three-quarters to the right with his arms folded, side whiskers, and spectacles. Havemeyer was a sugar refiner who also served as mayor of New York, and the plate came from Mathew Brady's studio, where prominent sitters were regularly photographed. Gold toning, applied to many daguerreotypes of the period, deepened the image and helped protect its delicate silver surface. The plate later passed to the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress in 1920.
