Here the sitter is George Perkins Marsh, the Vermont-born lawyer, philologist and congressman, shown in a half-length pose with his head turned three-quarters to the right and spectacles visible. The identification rests on a Healy portrait of Marsh held by Dartmouth College, and the plate is attributed to Mathew Brady's studio, one of the best-known portrait operations of the period. Marsh later served as American minister to the Ottoman Empire and to Italy, and his 1864 book *Man and Nature* is regarded as an early study of human impact on the landscape.
