Here a bearded man in spectacles turns three-quarters to the right in a gold-toned half-plate daguerreotype, a process that produced a single unique image on silvered copper. The Library of Congress attributes the portrait to George Bush (1796-1859), a biblical scholar who taught Hebrew at New York University, and links it to Mathew Brady's studio. The identification rests on a likeness in an 1860 memoir of Bush, though an earlier note on the plate suggests Elisha H. Allen of Ohio, a possibility the catalogers consider less likely. The plate's date falls somewhere between 1844 and 1859.

| Notes | Identification from engraving by H.W. Smith on frontispiece of Memoirs and reminiscences of the late Prof. George Bush, edited by Woodbury M. Fernald, 1860. Image in engraving is similar, but not identical to the daguerreotype and is not labelled as a Brady image. In documentation that came with the daguerreotype it was identified as Elisha H. Allen of Ohio (cat. 5) but this identification seems less likely. Scratched on back of plate: 293. Transfer; U.S. War College; 1920; (DLC/PP-1920:46153).
