Turned three-quarters to the right, this head-and-shoulders study shows Francis Bicknell Carpenter, who was in his twenties when the half-plate daguerreotype was made in the 1850s. A paper label on the cover glass bears his name, and the identification follows Meserve and Sandburg's 1944 catalog of Lincoln photographs. The plate is credited to Mathew Brady's studio, and gold toning gives its silvery surface a warmer tone. Carpenter later became a painter, best known for his canvas of Lincoln reading the Emancipation Proclamation to his cabinet.
