This half-plate daguerreotype shows Erastus Brooks, a New York newspaper editor and later a member of Congress, in a head-and-shoulders view turned three-quarters to the right. Brady's studio made the portrait sometime between 1844 and 1860, and gold toning gives the silver image a warmer tone and greater durability. The plate's rounded corners and the pencil and scratched numbers on its back show how such plates were cataloged and handled. Ballou's Pictorial reproduced the likeness as an engraving in January 1857, which reflects how widely photographic portraits of public figures were circulated in print during the period.
