Scratched into the plate beside a number is the name "Miss Cary," which points to Phoebe Cary (1824-1871), the Ohio-born poet who wrote and published alongside her sister Alice. The sisters moved to New York in the early 1850s and joined its literary circles. This head-and-shoulders portrait, turned three-quarters to the right, follows the conventions of mid-century studio work from Mathew Brady's workshop. The identification rests on an engraving in the Library of Congress's biographical file, so it is a documented attribution rather than a confirmed one.
