Few daguerreotypes from the 1850s show a man who would later lead a nation, but this small sixth-plate portrait captures Stephen Allen Benson in a head-and-shoulders view turned three-quarters to the right. Benson, born in the United States, emigrated to Liberia under the auspices of the American Colonization Society and later served as that republic's president. The sitter's identity rests on an engraving in the Society's 1856 annual report, and his name is also written on the inside of the case, a practical touch that helped keep such small plates tied to their subjects.
