This sixth-plate daguerreotype shows Stephen Allen Benson, who lived from 1816 to 1865, in a head-and-shoulders view turned three-quarters to the left. Made sometime between 1854 and 1860, it captures him during the peak years of the daguerreotype, when portraits like this were usually sealed in small hinged cases and carried as keepsakes. Each plate is a unique image on a polished silver-coated copper sheet, so the picture reads as a positive only at certain angles and carries a mirror-like sheen. Its small size and sharp detail are typical of the period's portrait trade.
