Thomas Hart Benton, turned three-quarters to the left in this head-and-shoulders study, appears here during the years when he was one of the most prominent figures in national politics. He had represented Missouri in the Senate since 1821, championing western expansion and a hard-money policy. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1845 and 1850, when daguerreotypes were fashionable for their fine detail, and the gold toning that warms its silvery surface was a common finishing step. Benton's name and the number 171 are scratched into the back of the plate.
