Hugh Brady was already in his late seventies when this plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1851. Brady, born in Ireland in 1768, rose through the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and spent decades on the frontier and in command posts before his death in 1851. The head-and-shoulders view, turned three-quarters to the left in uniform, lets the studio concentrate on the face and the military dress. The plate is gold toned, which softens the silvery surface typical of daguerreotypes and adds a warmer tone to the image.
