Scratched on the back of this half-plate daguerreotype is a note giving the sitter's brevet rank, 4th Artillery, and recording that he was lost on the steamer San Francisco. The sitter, John Macrae Washington, appears head and shoulders, turned three-quarters to the left in uniform, in a format Mathew Brady's studio produced widely in the 1840s and early 1850s. Gold toning warms the silver image and deepens its shadows. The plate later passed to the U.S. War College and reached the Library of Congress in 1920.
