Winfield Scott, the army general, sits for this daguerreotype in three-quarter profile, turned to the left and dressed in full military uniform. The portrait is identified by comparison with a lithograph of Scott by François d'Avignon, published in Charles Edwards Lester's 1850 *Gallery of Illustrious Americans*, a series of portraits that Mathew Brady's firm helped bring to print. Scott had earned wide fame for leading U.S. forces to victory in the Mexican War, and images of him circulated widely in the late 1840s. The plate is gold toned, a treatment that warmed the silver image and helped preserve its delicate surface.
