In this daguerreotype, Winfield Scott, the army's commanding general, appears in civilian dress rather than uniform, his head turned three-quarters to the right while his eyes face the camera. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1851 and 1860, a decade when Scott, known as "Old Fuss and Feathers," was a familiar public figure and the Whig nominee for president in 1852. The gold toning and the words "Gen. Scott" scratched into the plate help identify the sitter, and a related plate in the Library of Congress collection is probably a copy of this image. The plate later passed to the U.S. War College, which transferred it in 1920.
