This daguerreotype shows William C. Dawson, head and shoulders, turned three-quarters to the right, with his name and the number 118 scratched into the face of the plate, a studio or cataloguing mark. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio, which produced many portraits of prominent Americans in the 1840s and 1850s, and notes that the plate may be a copy of an earlier image. Its gold toning, applied after development, strengthened the silver surface and warmed its tones, while the trimmed corners and a 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College explain how the plate reached the Library of Congress.
