Scratched into the back of this half-plate daguerreotype is the note "Vice Prest. King," which places the sitter in the last weeks of his life, when William Rufus King held the vice presidency under Franklin Pierce. King, a former senator from Alabama who had also served as minister to France, took office in March 1853 and died in April, having served only about six weeks. The plate is attributed to Mathew Brady's studio, whose galleries made portraits of many public figures in these years. A number scratched on the face suggests it may be a copy of an earlier image.
