Turned slightly to the left, with his eyes fixed on the camera, the man in this half-plate daguerreotype is William Upham, identified through a woodcut in *Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion* from February 1853. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, which photographed many prominent Americans in the 1840s and early 1850s. Its gold toning, a treatment that deepened the image and helped protect the delicate silver surface, is worth noticing, as is the note "148; Upham" scratched on the back, a reminder of how studios tracked their plates.
