Robert Charles Winthrop, the Massachusetts statesman who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849, sits for this half-plate daguerreotype turned slightly to the left with his eyes fixed on the camera. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, a period when daguerreotypy was the dominant portrait process and sitters often came to studios like Brady's to have their likenesses taken. Scratched numbers on the plate and a later notation tying it to the U.S. War College and a 1920 transfer show how the plate passed through institutional hands before reaching the Library of Congress.
