The inscription "Bish. Chase" scratched into the plate identifies the sitter as Philander Chase, the Episcopal bishop who first led the church in Ohio. The likeness is a copy daguerreotype, made from a lithograph by the Kellogg brothers, so it records a printed portrait rather than a live sitting. Chase spent much of his career as a frontier missionary, founding Kenyon College in Ohio and Jubilee College in Illinois. The plate's link to Mathew Brady's studio places the image in the years when American portraiture was moving quickly toward photography, and it shows the cleric in the plain clerical cap of his calling.
