William Cullen Bryant, the poet and longtime editor of the New York Evening Post, sits for this whole-plate daguerreotype, a mirror-bright silver image that has been gold-toned to deepen its shadows and warm its highlights. The plate was made in the Mathew Brady studio in New York, which by the early 1850s was among the most fashionable portrait operations in the country and drew many of the nation's writers, politicians and public figures. Bryant, who wrote "Thanatopsis" as a young man and remained a leading voice in American letters for decades, is shown in a head-and-shoulders pose turned slightly to the left. The plate's maker is recorded in its Brady-Handy collection holdings, which gives the image a clear link to one of the period's key photographic workshops.
