Few early portraits of a future vice president survive, and this half-plate daguerreotype shows Hannibal Hamlin of Maine in a three-quarter view, turned slightly to the left. Hamlin, born in 1809, served in Congress and the Senate from Maine before the Civil War and was elected vice president under Abraham Lincoln in 1860. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, and its gold toning helped stabilize the silver surface and deepen the image. It was later transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920, and it now belongs to the Library of Congress.
