The sitter here is Daniel S. Dickinson, a New York Democrat who later served in the U.S. Senate, and the plate carries a scratched "J. Dickinson, N.Y." on its back. The likeness was matched to a mezzotint engraving that the *Democratic Review* published in August 1846 and credited to a daguerreotype by Marcus Aurelius Root's rival Plumbe, so the portrait's maker and date rest on that trail rather than a dated label. Its gold toning, which sharpened the silver image and softened its glare, was a common finish in the 1850s studio trade, and the plate is attributed to Mathew Brady's workshop.
