Daniel Webster sits in this sixth-plate daguerreotype, turned slightly to the right in a head-and-shoulders pose. The plate dates from between 1845 and 1849, when Webster was back in the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts after earlier serving as secretary of state and earning fame as a powerful orator. The image was produced in Mathew Brady's studio, one of the most prominent portrait operations of its day, and daguerreotypes like this were prized for their fine detail and mirror-like surface. The plate later reached the Library of Congress by transfer from the U.S. War College in 1920.
